Workplace Threats - Real or not so much

Idle threat or real intent

Idle threat or real intent

Threats to people safety and security inside organisations is not uncommon - The challenge is to move quickly to identify who is behind it and their motive
— Paul Walsh

A large private trust company manages millions in clients funds and client estates. Over the past two years it has been receiving a number of threats. The threats are are both specific to people and general in nature.

At the start it was random calls to the call centre “your bosses better be careful, you’ve f**ked me around now I’m gonna do the same to you”. Just a another random nut case caller or so they thought.

The calls morphed into carefully constructed threatening letters, anonymous but alarming. ‘You’ve messed with my family, now I’m gonna mess with you”.

Just threats or real intent. They have thousands of customers so who is it, is it even a customer ? The police are involved but it’s not their highest priority.

You know who the offender is, you just don’t know it….. Yet. There is a connection, you just need to find it, gather the evidence and present it to the police on a plate.

Workplace Investigations -Get the facts

Workplace investigations require balance, sensitivity and investigative expertise

When an organisation gets a number of threats like the story above, it’s important not to treat them in silo and make sure the nature of the threats are centralised so you can lift up a bit and see if there is a connection.

One random call might be able to be written off as random, but if there is evidence to tie together a whole bunch of those threats - then you have a problem that you need visibility over.

But within that problem is an opportunity. An opportunity to tie the evidence together, to dig into your client base and do some good old fashion investigative work, mix this with some modern computer data and forensic analytics and chances are you will be able to solve it.

Start gathering all the information about the threats, analyse the information , turn it into intelligence you can see and use.

You know who is responsible, you know this person - you just don’t know it yet.

Be curious, and bring in that private investigative expertise if required.
