Social engineered theft in New Zealand

NZ Police confirm crime trends in offshore offending is flooding into NZ. No IT firewalls or antivirus software can protect against these evolving thefts because, well we are not computers. They are not waves of mass, impersonal emails, rather they are well articulated, familiar and very individualised, making them hard to spot.  This is often referred to as Business Email Compromises (BEC), and/or Phishing.

What can you do to protect your organisation?

So what can you do about Business Compromised Email in your workplace? The first step is easy - broaden your situation awareness set of life skills to include what malicious social engineering looks like, this includes making sure you can spot the risk flags and have a plan to counter these attacks. Company culture shifts are the second line of defence and can be tweaked or need a great deal of effort depending on the size of the organisation, the relationship between executive and the teams that work for them, overall staff engagement and values that are held - the real ones, not what is written on a poster or job ad.

What would happen in your organisation?
